Midterm Paper

             The word "gospel" is defined as good news. In the New Testament, there are four gospels accounts: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. All four gospels present Jesus as both the Son of God and son of man. The first three gospels written by Matthew, Mark, and Luke are sometimes recognized as the "same view" gospels, which each covers Jesus' teaching and miracles and also covered in another account. However, John's gospel was written later, recounts Jesus' other words and miracles that have a particular spiritual meaning.
             According to the Bible, Matthew was one of Jesus' first twelve disciples and therefore an eye-witness of Jesus' words and miracles. He records more of Jesus' teaching concerning God's heavenly kingdom than the other writers, for example the entire Sermon on the Mount.
             Mark was Peter's son, who recorded what Peter said about Jesus, who He was, what He did, where He went and what happened; Mark's gospel is therefore Peter's account, also an eye-witness account, but written down by Mark.
             Luke, probably did not become a Christian until several years after the death and resurrection of Jesus, was a doctor and a co-worker with Peter who was amazed by Jesus' stories, thus decided to interview local eye-witnesses and people who had followed Jesus closely and collated all interviews into a single account. He did not, therefore, meet Jesus in life and he himself was not an eye-witness.
             John was again one of Jesus' first twelve disciples and therefore also eye-witnessed Jesus' stories. His writes more of the spiritual significance as well as the practical aspects of Jesus' works and words. John lived to be older than any of the previous three writers, it's therefore more likely that he was familiar with their accounts and wanted to supplement theirs with additional Jesus' teaching and miracles towards the end of the first c...
