Midterm Paper
The word "gospel" is defined as good news. In the New Testament, there are four gospels accounts: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. All four gospels present Jesus as both the Son of God and son of man. The first three gospels written by Matthew, Mark, and Luke are sometimes recognized as the "same view" gospels, which each covers Jesus' teaching and miracles and also covered in another account. However, John's gospel was written later, recounts Jesus' other words and miracles that have a particular spiritual meaning.According to the Bible, Matthew was one of Jesus' first twelve disciples and therefore an eye-witness of Jesus' words and miracles. He records more of Jesus' teaching concerning God's heavenly kingdom than the other writers, for example the entire Sermon on the Mount. Mark was Peter's son, who recorded what Peter said about Jesus, who He was, what He did, where He went and what happened; Mark's gospel is therefore Peter's account, also an eye-witness account, but written down by Mark. He did not, therefore, meet Jesus in life and he himself was not an eye-witness. Compared to Mark, Matthew and Luke' Gospels are more focusing on either Jesus' teaching or the spiritual significance of Jesus' words and works. By understanding the background of the four evangelists, my opinion on the biblical order of the four Gospels should be: Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John. Therefore, he has to be the last one who completed his Gospel in the New Testament. Peter, through Mark, shows us that our Lord Jesus fulfils all the criteria of the Servant-Messiah who cares for people and serves God. The third evidence for placing Mark's Gospel as the first one is based on how detail-oriented and how accurately his writing shows. John lived to be older than any of the previous three writers, it's therefore more likely that he was familiar with their accounts and wanted to supplement theirs with additional Jesus' teaching and miracles towards the end of the first century CE. His writes more of the spiritual significance as well as the practical aspects of Jesus' works and words. Even though Matthew, Peter, Luke, and John were all one of Jesus' first twelve disciples; however, Peter was the first one to publicly recognize Jesus as the Messiah. John was again one of Jesus' first twelve disciples and therefore also eye-witnessed Jesus' stories. They got big influence from Jesus that it is more likely for them to add on their own beliefs and opinions on Jesus' words and works. He wrote down Jesus' whole life in details as the Son of God and the son of man by telling people who He was, what He did, where He went, and what happened rather than recording more of Jesus' teaching concerning God's heavenly kingdom, bringing out the spiritual significance as well as the practical aspects of Jesus' works and words, or giving out his own opinions on Jesus. Overall, if Mark's Gospel is recognized as the book of Jesus, then Matthew and Luke's Gospels should be the extended version of preaching Jesus' teaching and miracles, then finally John's Gospel is the combination of the three accounts with additional Jesus' teaching and miracles. I chose Mark to be the first evangelist of the four Gospels is because his account was an actual eye-witnessed narrative writing of the Lord Jesus.
