Macabea in Chronicle of death

V. Clarice Lispector, The Hour of the Star. Clarice's use of literature as a means to effect social and psychological change Clarice makes use of literature as a means to affect the social and psychological problems of the time, making a contribution to the women's struggle to achieve sexual and social order. She narrates the final days in the life of a poor, uneducated woman, Macabea, and the misfortunes that oppress her, revealing how men's power and his constraints over women, reflect on women's intellectual ability and social status. Lispector reveals political and social messages through her existentialist, abstract notions in a very subtle manner, "if the reader is financially secure and enjoys the comforts of life, he must step out of himself and see how others live...here I am acting as a safety valve for the bourgeoisie." Lispector uses language to portray how male and female roles and goals are seen in Brazilian society. The main protagonist, Macabea, and her boyfriend Olimpico both represent characters without hope or promise, confined by society. However, Olimpico, despite his impoverished background, is ambitious. He tries to use terms and words he has heard from others (without really knowing their meani

She dreams about having creamy skin in colors, and finds it so appetizing that she becomes obsessed and tells herself that if she could afford it she would by it and would eat it. Macabea's death establishes her position as women, dying with passion. "Macabea's inferiority is seen in her dialogues with Olimpico. to separate her voice from that of the main characters, and this creates a vehicle to address sexism as well as poverty and oppression in a non-biased manner. She dies as she always lived: senselessly and insignificantly, "except that these people peered at her and gave her an existence" as she died. " Macabea, guided by the pattern of behaviors and silence that she is raised to act by, is a product of society; sweet and obedient and "mused by silence. Radio and magazines serve to fill a void in Macabea for she lacks self-identity. And one day the whole world is going to be talking about me. She dreams of being a star like Marilyn Monroe and one day having her own "Hour of the Star. Macabea is unable to recognize or manipulate the simplest words in the language system, and although Olimpico initially attempts to use politeness, he discards it, seeing that Macabea's capacity for dialogue is limited. " Furthermore, Lispector believes that Macabea, as all females, are not exploited by males because they are females, but because they have made themselves easy targets in society. " This silence continues to dominate her entire life and her relationship with Olimpico, who was rude and authoritarian, taking advantage of Macabea's female qualities. Moreover, she reveals the incapacity of man to demonstrate affection when communicating with others, "another writer, of course, but it would have to be a man, for a women would weep her out. " Olimpico accentuates her sense of inferiority by proclaiming his own importance, "In the backwoods, of Paraibo, everybody has heard of Olimpico.
