Canada and Multiculturalism

             Canada passed the Multiculturalism Act in 1989 that supports a variety of cultures of other countries. Since Canada is always opened for immigrants from other countries, ethnic and cultural diversity are respected. According to Statistics Canada, population of immigrants has dramatically grown from 1980's to 2001, which was from 1,041,500 to 1,830,680 people. This has influenced on Canada's identity that is the unique characteristic that can best describe a nation. There are two choices to form the future identity of Canada. One is the Narrow Focus, or Me First, and the other is Broad Focus, or Work Together. Broad Focus represents the understanding each other, while Narrow focus indicates own interests and over-ruling the others. I strongly support the idea of Broad Focus. In this essay, I'll talk about the reasons I advocate this idea, the consequences and comments on the Broad Focus.
             First of all, let me tell you about why I am for the Broad Focus. Canada is officially a multicultural country. It means whole different races live together in one country. There are many ethnic groups in Canada such as Anglophone and Francophone as well as aboriginal people and the immigrants who came from the countries over the world. All the different ethnic groups have different characteristics, and that indicates that the more cultural diversity there exists, the more conflict could occur. Therefore, to live in harmony, we should go for the idea of Work Together. Let's think about what would happen if we chose the Narrow focus. As I mentioned above, there are likely to be conflicts and crimes regarding races in multicultural countries. But if we adopted the idea like Me First, the society would have been more horrible. Every person would only works for him/herself and segregate others who have different face color. The other reason I support this is that this can contribute to the economic growth.
