Analyzing a Childs Speech

Analyzing a child's receptive and expressive language is crucial in determining a child's functioning level of language development. In order to determine a what stage of language development the child is in we must obtain a language sample and then dissect the sample while calculating the mean length of utterance, and considering the 5 components of language, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and phonology.
The following language sample was obtained form a 3 years 11 month old girl named Allison. Allison was born on December 7, 1998 with no prenatal complications. She began walking at 11 months of age, and seems to be progressing along with other children her age. Allison has no previous health impairments nor has she had difficulty with ear infections. The following conversation took place in the adult's living room. The child and the adult were both playing with the adult's dog and then moved onto coloring on plain paper.
