"Full Metal Jacket," directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1987 was an exceptional re-creation of the monstrocities of the Vietnam War, and what soldiers go through during not only war, but the process of becoming a killer through bootcamp. This film goes very deep into the core of our Armed Forces. The story starts out in bootcamp with four main characters. There is the Senior Drill Instructor, Sergeant Hartman, and three privates, Leonard Lawrence, better known as Gomer Pyle throughout the film, Joker, and also Cowboy. In the beginning a camera pans across the faces of the soldiers as they are getting their heads shaved. Then the camera cuts straight into a shot of Sergeant Hartman breaking in the new privates by screaming at them and speaking down to them. This is where all of the men got their nicknames. This is the beginning of the slow process of turning these men into killers. Gomer Pyle is a character who seems to screw everything up. After going too far by hiding a donut in his locker, Sergeant Hartman decides that everyone in his camp but Pyle will be punished for his actions throughout the rest of the film. This really gets to the rest of the privates, and one night in the barracks they hold Pyle down and beat him with bars of soap. This is a turning point for Pyle. Soon after, the privates notice that Pyle is talking to his weapon, and catching on to things much quicker. One night when Joker, the private helping Pyle get through camp easier, is on guard duty he hears a noise from the bathroom, so he goes to check it out. Pyle is
             basically at his last straw and ends up shooting Sergeant Hartman before turning the gun on himself. The rest of the movie takes place in Vietnam.
