A Dolls House
Henrik Ibsen’s “A Dolls House” is one of his best known plays. He is known to create theater that explores social issues in an entertaining way. In “A Dolls House”, Ibsen takes a look at the role of women in the late 1800’s. When it first opened, people became outraged. Instead of the play being wrapped up nice and neat by the end, it leaves you wanting more and wondering what is going to happen next.Over the course of this paper, we will take a look at the structure of the play by looking at the six elements Aristotle thought were the most important in any play; plot, characters, theme, diction, music, spectacle, and convention. We will also take a look at the seventh element of convention and how it works itself into the play to makes the play come to life. As we begin the play, we see Nora coming in to the house with packages from her day of Christmas shopping. There is a general sense of happiness. Nora seems to be full of life and reminds you of a child by her clothes and her giddiness. Soon after returning home, Nora is met by her husband, Torvald. Torvald has recently received a promotion at the bank, which will allow the Helmer family to be able to afford some of the finer things in life . . .
On the other hand, Nora was never in front of a light that would allow her to cast a shadow the size of Torvalds. He is most often seen in a suit and tie presenting the stiffness of the job that he now has. In the late 1800’s, a woman leaving her husband was unheard of. Music also includes things like the sounds that you would hear in the background. The way that words were spoken can be considered music. After seeing the play at the Rep, I felt bad or Nora since her husband had treated her so badly. For example, Nora was considered a child so she was talked to as a child. Her world involves her taking care of the children with the help of a nanny. Many people, myself included, thought that the piano was actually being played by Torvald and Dr. Regardless, it had an impact on how Nora was represented.
