History of Black Subjugation
Blacks placement in American society have been a central issue to domestic politics in the us since the first black slaves stepped onto us soil in 1619.The American nation as a whole, has felt strong conflicting sentiments about slavery, segregation and discrimination.The American masses attitudes toward democracy has been commitment to abstract ideals with substantially less commitment to their practice. The thirteenth amendment abolished slavery every where in the US in 1865. Fourteenth amendment passed in 1867, was to make for equal protection of the laws. A command for every state to obey.The fifteenth amendment passed in 1869 prohibited federal and state governments from allowing the right to vote "on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.Congress went on to passing a series of civil rights statutes in the 1860s and 1870s guaranteeing freed African-Americans protection in their constitutional rights.The Civil rights act of 1875 outlawed segregation by privately owned businesses offering to serve the public. Between 1865 and the early 1880's the success of the civil rights movement, showed up in the presence of blacks in federal and state offic
The first sit ins were held in Greensboro, North Carolina by college students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College. The boycott brought king nationwide attention and led to the creation in 1957 of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). The SNCC encouraged blacks to feel proud to being black. They marched to the Lincoln memorial, where king delivered his I have a Dream speech. And that separating the two races in different schools was just showing that colored people were inferior. The Bakke Case:Regents of the University of Califronia v. Presidential Use of Force:President Dwight Eisenhower decided to use military force in 1957 to secure the enforcement of a deferral court order to desegregate Little Rocks Central High school. Increasingly, the goal of the civil rights movement has shifted from traditional goal of equality of opportunity to one of affirmative action to establish goals and timetables to achieve equality of results. This brought about the Montgomery, Alabama boycott in which blacks refused to use public transportation. The Civil rights act of1964:Passed in both houses of congress by two-thirds favorable vote, it had overwhelming support. So Governor orval Faubus posted state units of the Arkansas national guard at the High School, to prevent federal marshals from caring out federal court orders to admit black students President Eisenhower officially called the national guard units into federal service, ordered them to leave the highschool, and replaced them with the US 101st airborne division under the orders to enforce desegregation. The supreme court upheld state laws requiring segregation. Allan Bakke applied two years and wasn't admitted, but later found out there were sixteen minority places in a class of one hundred that would be excepted per year. The military left occupation in the south.
