             In today's society, a lot of emphasis is put on body image in media. As a result from these impressions, young men and women are subjected to suffering from eating disorders. Through studying the areas of Bulimia Nervosa and Anorexia Nervosa, the impressions of magazines, high school settings, and dieting, it is easier to understand why these people put their bodies through such agony. Through extensive research, these findings will better allow people to understand the influence media has on today's society.
             Bulimia Nervosa and Anorexia Nervosa are disorders that negatively effect someone's body both mentally and physically. These disorders effect both men and women and are caused in most cases from a distorted impression of one's body. In Bulimia, the person with the disorder will go through frequent periods of overeating called binges. It is very hard to control and stop a binge once it has started. After the person binges, they purge by vomiting or by taking large doses of laxatives. Most people suffering from Bulimia Nervosa do not gain weight. Bulimia is also most common in women, especially those ages thirteen to forty. "Overeating was the norm...what I focused on was to stop bingeing and sneak-eating-to eat the cake at a birthday party and not later by myself"(Espinoza 2). There are many health risks that go along with Bulimia Nervosa such as damage to teeth and gums from the acid in vomit, a continual sore throat, and dehydration. Many people that are known to have this disorder are trying to relieve themselves from the symptoms by taking antidepressant drugs. Bulimia Nervosa also coincides with Anorexia Nervosa. Many people who suffer from one disorder will suffer from the other as well. The American Medical Association defines Anorexia Nervosa as "a psychological or behavioral disorder in which the sufferer believes she is overweight despite being dangerously thin" (Clayman 114).
