Trends in the Hungarian Media
It is a general statement that the state of the Hungarian media is all confused. The public television remained public only in marks, and a lot of people question the priorities of the commercial televisions. Some people also think, that the laws of the game do not apply equally on each television company. We might have thought, that with the appearance of commercial televisions we will have advanced television, even if it goes with difficulties, but now it is rather total chaos at the field of the media, however chaos and development don't preclude each other.Technical develoment and technological changes have been made. RTL Klub has built it's headquarters, and TV2, by moving into the almost hundred years old premises of Hungarian film industry, to the Rona streer, has contributed to the fact that this place still plays an imoprtant part in Hungarian audiovisual culture. Here we can see how one behaves in front of a camera. What decides which aspect shall appear on the screen? From an economic point of view, what decides is the fact that how much does it cost, and is the television company able to regain the cost from the commercial profits. If people talk about war, or politics, than TV should do the same. Intellectuals should awaken such cultural demands in society that makes todays commercial television fail. On the other hand this doesn't really interest people anyway. It is also important, that how much visualization does that topic need. That licence could be taken for free from the Americans, that every ethnical minority is represented equally on the screen. Morning shows gain one or two percents of the audience ratings, while evening shows gain ten, twenty or thirty percent. One may ask, does our life appear on the screen? It is not sure that TV is able to reflect every aspect of life. It also depends ont he level of abstraction that is needed to discuss about different topics in detail. Concerning morning shows - where generally people talk around a table, they show us extrenal recordings, there are hardly any mounted reports - we may ask, where is the special appearance? The race between these morning shows is to win the attention of about the nine percent of the age groups above the age of four. From this amount of money morning shows can hardly create a more spectacular image. These programmes should not be exposing programmes, but they should have a function that shows the society it's diversity thus sperading tolerance. This market is quite small, thus these shows can support themselves in a quite difficult way.
