Utnapishtim compare and contra

             Compare and Contrast Noah and Utnapishtim
             The story of Noah's ark and the story of Utnapishtim are two different, yet similar accounts of a flood that exterminated the human race. Both are from different religious points of view (Noah's ark is from the Bible and Utnapishtim from the Epic of Gilgamesh) but share similarities, as well as differences.
             In the Biblical account of the flood (Noah's ark), God sends the flood upon earth to wipe out the human race except for Noah, his family, and two of each creature in the entire world. God sends the flood because he feels that there is too much evil in every human's heart. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, the flood was sent by one of the many gods, Enlil, because he could not sleep due to the uproar of mankind. In that account of a flood, Enlil tells Utnapishtim to build a boat to save himself and a seed of every creature in the world, and in the Biblical account of the flood, God tells Noah to take himself, his family, and two of each creature in the world. However, the amount of time the flood lasted was different by a large margin.
             In both stories of the floods, the entire human race was exterminated, but in the story of Noah's ark, the flood lasted one-hundred and fifty days and one-hundred and fifty nights as in the story of Utnapishtim's account, the flood lasted six days and six nights.
             The similarities of the two floods were that a God sent the flood, the flood exterminated the human race (other than what was saved upon in the boat/ship), the reason why the gods sent the flood are more or less similar, and that they are both two religious accounts passed on from generations to generations. Although there are many similarities, small details such as the length of the flood, who or what the ship saved, and which god sent the flood, are different.
