Christopher Columbus:Hero/Not

In 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail for a long adventurous journey that resulted in the discovery of America. The one question is, was Columbus truly a hero for this unearthing that people thought was magnificent? The answer is certainly not. What Columbus should be famous for is death, slaughter, and taking over a land that was not his. Columbus is really a villain who killed, enslaved, and raped the innocent Indians. Christopher Columbus turned a discovery into a takeover that lead to death and slaughter. In January, we honor a true hero, Martin Luther King. This man fought for the rights of the black people. Columbus unstoppably ordered his men to kill and torture Native Americans. Your honor, the facts of this case will show that Columbus really wasn't everything that he is taught and brought up to be. Columbus should not be seen as a hero because of his cruelty, egotistic attitude, and greediness as shown through his encounters with the Native Americans. First of all, this cruel, malicious man brutally enslaved and attacked the Native Americans found on the new land. Columbus set sail on a good note in the intent to find a shorter route to Asia by sailing west to get east. Upon the arrival of the ne

Although Columbus was not the only man doing this, he was the leader of his crew and as the leader, he makes every decision. " It basically stated that if they did not follow Columbus's instructions he would bestow the power of God upon himself and make war everywhere and that death and injury was only the Indians faults and no one else's. " (Columbia Encyclopedia) Since Christopher Columbus brought new weapons, such as knives and guns to the New World, he killed off many vulnerable animals such as bison, which are now extinct, in order to obtain food for him and his men. This is something Columbus wrote upon arriving to the new land, "I showed them a sword, they took it by edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. When ready, the Spaniards chose 500 of these lifeless slaves to load onto the ships, with only 300 surviving the grueling haul to Spain. "It is possible that the plants and animals that he brings with him have caused the extinction of more species of life forms in the last four hundred years than the usual processes of evolution might kill off in a million. Secondly, Christopher Columbus is a highly egotistical man. Not only was Columbus voyage a huge effect on the Native Americans, but it also changed the environment and damaged it greatly. He not only killed these Native Americans, but he also tortured them in the process. Unlike previous explorers or people who were around this land, Columbus commercialized it and took his world and brought it into the Natives, without any permission. The Vikings were even there before Columbus. "(Berliner) During the time, Columbus and his men hunted these blameless Indians for beating, raping, torture, sport and killing using them as food for their hunting dogs. How can such a wonderful event like this discovery of an unknown land to Europe involve such gluttonous and savage things? The only accomplishment was taking a land that some already knew about and presenting it to Europe to be admired for his discovery and to receive gold and jewels. It represents the beginning of the destruction of Native American peoples and cultures. Columbus Day should not be celebrated when people of this land we call America were killed.
