Internet and the press
Military has always been one of the first priorities in the building and maintenance of every nation. It was do to military need that inventions such as the telegraph, telephone, radio, satellite communication, and the internet were first developed. The internet was developed during the cold war mainly because the military wanted to be able to communicate through a computer network in case that nuclear war broke out. The internet has come a long way since the first successful communication messages were sent through the Apranet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). By the 1970's there was such heavy traffic on the Apranet that it was necessary for it to divide into two different networks, the Milnet which was used for the military, and the original Arpanet which was now dedicated to educational use. In the 1980's NSFNet replaced the Arpanet and established itself as the main Internet system of the United States. It wasn't until 1989 that the World Wide Web came along, and with it the internet became the new age of communication. Not having access to electronic mail is almost like not having a phone number where to be reached at. The concept of instant gratification is one of the American ideas that the Internet carries with it. I'm afraid that if nothing is done to at least regulate some of the content that appears on the web, it might one day become too corrupted and dirty for many to enjoy. The flip side to that coin is that Government might control the content of the Internet to too great of an extent. For example, reading a magazine or a newspaper does not seem as attractive as surfing the net for the information one is searching for. This new technology has reached many citizens of the industrialized countries of the world, and also some in Third World Nations. initial APARANET host-to host protocol, called the Network Control Protocol (NCP), was developed by the Network Working Group (NWG). Consequently, APRANET was divided into two different networks. Countries such as Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and many others are very strict on the content of what their civilians have access to. The Internet has brought a piece of the American lifestyle to many of those who use it. In 1969 the first IMPs was installed at UCLA and the initial communication was successful. Today, the Internet has become a widespread medium for entertainment, information acquisition, electronic commerce, and interaction between individuals. For the next week I received a couple of nasty messages from people who I did not know, asking me to remove them, and telling me that I was nasty. Department of Defense was concerned about the fact that the nation's communication networks could not withstand a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union. Regardless of the controversy which surrounds media coverage, most critics agree that the extensive options available to the public in regards to coverage of presidential events should allow the population to make the best democratic decisions.
