Right to Bear Arms
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" (Amendment II, US constitution). The words say it all. Still some people believe that we should reduce the amount of guns kept in the homes of U.S. citizens; while others feel strongly that it is their constitutional rights are in violation. One of the biggest supporters of the Second Amendment is a group called the NRA (National Rifle Association). This group has defended the rights of gun owners since 1871. Groups that have strength in numbers usually dominate what decisions are being made, and the NRA has the numbers. They currently have over 3.5 million members all fighting for the same cause, their constitutional right to bear arms (Anderson 12). Statistics show that waiting periods imposed to purchase firearms do not prevent crime. Research has show that the most common time for murders of passion is between the times of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m., which is long after the time gun shops close. Why do waiting periods not work? After looking through the statistics of violent crimes, murder, assault, robbery, the results are in favor of those who oppose gun control. First I took a look at the second amendment, and how it is worded. As of 1996 seven states forbid concealed handguns, twelve states had discretionary rules, and the remaining thirty-one states had no rules, or permit requirements. If there were bans on guns this may have prevented his death; I used the word may because there are other ways he could have gone about committing suicide, but the gun in the thing that took his life.
