Research on Traumatic Brain Injuries

             Climbing up the rope was going great when all of a sudden, the rope broke and he fell to the bottom. His head smashed into a rock when he hit the dirt at the bottom of the hill. Head injuries are a serious problem. Whenever you are dealing with the brain, you want to take everything about the injury very seriously. You must prepare for the worst. This is because the brain controls the actions of the body. The brain is composed of many different parts and functions that rely on each other. Injuring the brain has different effects on people because it depends on the brain part that was injured. This determines the form of recovery treatment that is necessary for the brain to return to its normal operating condition. A traumatic brain injury is a disability that comes from an injury to the brain. This includes the brain stem that will result in impaired cognitive, physical, or emotional functioning. The side of the brain receiving damage will impair functions on the opposite side of the body and impair mental capabilities.
             The brain has two distinct sides: the right and left cerebral hemispheres. The cerebral hemispheres are the majority of the brain and account for 85% of the brain's weight. The cerebral hemispheres are divided into sections called lobes. Each part of the brain has special jobs to do and sections of the brain work together: "Each has a specific function: to turn sounds into speech; to process color; to register fear; to recognize a face or distinguish a fish from a fruit." (Carter, Pg10)
             Research has found that all gathered information would travel through the mind, to the correct domain for processing of the information.
