Night
Night, by Elie Wiesel, is a very dark novel. It is about the horrific events of the holocaust during world war two, as seen through the eyes of a young Jewish boy. Living through the horrifying experiences in the German concentration camps of Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Elie sees his family, friends and fellow Jews starved, degraded, and murdered. In this essay, we will do a general study on the novel, including biographical information on the author, the setting in which the story takes place, along with a plot summary and several themes. Eliezer (Elie) Wiesel was born in Sighet, Transylvania on September 30, 1928. He had two older sisters Hilda and Bea, and a younger sister named Tzipora. Elie speaks a language called Yiddish at home, and he speaks Hungarian, Romanian, and German outside he also learned classical Hebrew at school. In his early years, he devoted much of his time studying religion, although his father encouraged him to study modern Hebrew and secular subjects. Elie had been separated from his mother and younger sister when he was 15 and never saw them again, his two older sisters survived the whole ordeal. One of the main themes in Night is the title itself, Elie Wiesel carefully chose "Night" as the title because it conjured up many mental images. The novel is a true story with the dark and disturbing plot that keeps the reader both interested and on the edge of their seat from the very first page to the last. Another important quote in the novel is was when Elie was working in the crematory and one of the workers said, "Look over there, that is your grave. Because of Hitler's hate towards the Jewish people, he had them tortured and murdered. Perhaps less than that even: a starved stomach. The cruelty over a faith they believed in is unbelievable. In the ninth and final chapter, the Allied army arrives and frees the prisoners. Even during the day the black smoke from the crematories hang over the camps. The situational irony in Night is when Elie prays to God for strength not to behave callously towards his own father and leave him like the other boy had done, but in the end he has to leave his father in order to survive. In the beginning of the book, page 4, one of the Jews spoke up as a Hungarian train took off crammed full of Jews. They were burnt alive with no hesitations. In the eighth chapter, Elie is found nursing his sick father, who eventually dies at Buchenwald. The surviving prisoners are loaded in roofless cattle wagons and sent on a freezing ten-day journey to Buchenwald in Germany.
