Death of a Salesman
Arthur Miller's, Death of a Salesman is a play about a character's American dream. Willy Loman, a salesman, believes he is someone he isn't because he wants to live his dream. The dream and Willy's family, eventually cause Willy to commit suicide. Willy lives with his wife Linda, and sons Biff and Happy. Biff, his oldest son, is the main character that drove Willy to taking his own life. Reasons for this are Biff's relationship with his father, the secrets between them, and how their outlooks on like are different. First, Biff's relationship with Willy is very unsteady. They are always arguing or finding a way to get at one another's throats. "...The closer you seem to come, the more shaky he gets, and then, by the time you get here, he's arguing, and he seems angry at you. I think it's just that maybe he can't bring himself to-to open up to you..."(54) Linda, Willy's wife, says this to Biff. Whenever Biff arrives home, him and Willy can never get along. Biff says "I am not a leader of men, Willy, and neither are you. "No, with a ranch I could do the work I like and still be something. This pushes Willy to suicide because he's more frustrated around Biff which cause his actions to be fierce. "(33) Willy has been living a lie and at the end it finally catches up to him. Biff Loman drove Willy to taking his own life because of their father-son relationship, the many secrets they had, and their perspectives on life. Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller displays a man that had all the wrong dreams and they finally ended in death. "That's why I thank Almighty God you're both built like Adonises. Willy and Biff have opposite outlooks on life. Willy is wrong and still thinks Biff is going to be great after he just told him he is nothing. "(26) He knows what he wants and throughout the whole play he tries to tell Willy the truth, but Willy believes that to succeed a person must have personal attractiveness. Biff wants to live his life on a farm. After this Willy says, "When the mail comes he'll be ahead of Bernard again!"(135) Willy is going to commit suicide so Biff will get the insurance.
