Great Gatsby color sybolism

            Colors are a major part of everyday life. Colors are used so much they have become associated with different emotions over the years. Everyone knows black is good and white is evil, and purple means royalty and yellow represent cowardice. Many colors have meaning in The Great Gatsby however two stand out more than others. The two main colors found in The Great Gatsby are green and white. Within the story green represents thoughts and choices that Gatsby makes. While white represents the old rich facade that most characters hide behind.
             The color green represents all of Gatsby's life choices that he makes throughout the novel. The green is physically manifested as the green light at the end of the dock near Daisy's house. Green often times in literature represents serenity. This warns Gatsby that he should not pursue his dream of getting daisy back and all is as it should be. It is even more significant that the light is all the way across the water from Gatsby because it is well out of reach, as is his dream. Shown from Nick's point of view the passage reads "...His dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him..." (P. 189).
             On more symbol of the color green that contradicts the first in the meaning "go". In a stop light people associate green with "go". This could be interpreted as Gatsby should go for his dream or strive to obtain it. In this way it seems as though Gatsby should continue to attempt to steal Daisy from Tom Buchanan. This could be seen as an encouragement. Gatsby obviously believes he can change things back to the way they were when he states " 'I'm going to fix everything just the way they were before.' he said nodding determinedly. 'She'll see.'"(p. 117).
