             A theme is presented in every novel to give the readers an idea of the subject matter being discussed. Both novels, Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquirel and Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez shared a common theme entitled, "The dominance of the physical". Both novels reveal that the body needs to be physically pleased and that the mind does not always control the body. The human flesh needs to be lovingly touched and excited; this need is the paramount need. Apart from sexual pleasure, the body also reacts towards violence which is exposed in both novels.
             In the novel 'Like Water for Chocolate', Gertrudis 'sexual drive' is a 'drive' that comes externally. The mind has no control what so ever over the body. Gerturdis 'wilderness' points out that the body needs to experience pleasure. In page 67, an erotic but non-tactile event takes place between Tita and Pedro. "If it hadn't been... Pedro would have ended up caressing the breasts Tita offered him". Tita's conscience warns her that her sexual offering to Pedro would cause major friction within the family as he is married to her sister, yet her body is unable to resists him. Tita's conscience once again fails to work in chapter eight as she and Pedro ends up having sex in the storage room while Pedro was still legally married to Rosaura. Both individuals are aware that their sexual intercourse would cause more disorder within the family but are unable to restrain themselves. Apart from that this also depicts how Tita's body was satisfied through Pedro in a way her fiancée, Dr. Brown could not satisfy. Tita is capable of losing everything Dr. Brown has to offer her ranging from wealth to shelter and yet she has no control over herself when she is alone with Pedro.
