For this project, I researched fifteen important dates of war, battles, attacks and treaties that were somehow connected to war. Kennedy is assassinated FridayJuly 20, 1969 Moon Landing SundayNovember 9, 1989 Berlin Wall falls ThursdaySeptember 11, 2001 World Trade Center Attack MondayExplanation Page This project is about how you can use a formula, and by knowing the month, day, and year of an event, you can find which day of the week it occurred. The greatest integer function brackets mean to round down the number inside the brackets if there is a fraction on the number. I also used a variety of dates from more than four different centuries. The formula is: W= d + 2m + 3(m+1) + y + y - y + y + 2, where d equals the day, m equals the 5 4 100 400month, and y equals the year. Then I used the equation and solved to find out which day of the week it occurred on by working on loose-leaf paper. This is how I used the formula for day of the week to find the day of the week for my birthday, the declaration of independence, and fifteen important dates related to United States conflict and agreements. All of the other months are numbered from three to twelve. On a January or February event, you have to make them a thirteenth or fourteenth month of the previous year, so that you use thirteen or fourteen as the month and subtract one from the year. It tells you to take off the fraction in the number so that there are no numbers after the decimal, making the number an integer. The remainder tells you the day of the week, with zero being Saturday, one being Sunday, and two being Monday, etc. Once you find the value of W, then you do long division, dividing W by seven, to find the remainder.
