ANALYSIS OF A POTENTIAL CHANGE
The purpose of this report is to recommend that EuroCrown Communications change the name and mascot of the Cleveland Indians. Recently there has been intense media and public scrutiny concerning the Indian name and the chief Wahoo logo, which could have negative effects on EuroCrown Communications image.This report will respond to questions and concerns regarding the proposed Cleveland name change that may be passed by the EuroCrown Communications board members. Issues addressed includes legal/social issues to using native American symbols, affects on team names on society, how long this issue has been around, how else the native American people are being exploited, if other teams have successfully or unsuccessfully changed their name, costs and time involved, and if there will be public resistance to the change, and if so, how this resistance can be overcome. These issues where addressed using different secondary sources.The report finds that there have been several trials judging against other Indian team names, like the Redskins, and that there are a great opposition to the Cleveland name and logo, expressed by prominent members of the society. Native Americans have also taken legal steps in trying to rectify depiction of Indians in sports. Legal and social issues are the biggest aspects concerning this topic. Andrew Brother Elk, chair of the cultural centre, filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission and CBS responded by issuing a statement saying that they were sorry if anyone had been offended by the performance (Burke, 2004). The Marketing Challenges of Changing a Team's NameThere are numerous costs that are involved in the process of changing a professional sports team's name and mascot. These issues that have been developing for the Washington Redskins should be seen as foreshadowing for the Cleveland Indians' baseball organization.
