Recombinant DNA Experiments: S

In this letter we manifest our concern on recent recombinant DNA experiments. Its purpose is to direct the government's attention to such activities. Recombinant DNA consists of artificially making modifications to the DNA genome of a living organism in order to get a specimen with desired features that it would not have under normal circumstances or in nature. The DNA genome is the complete set of instructions for making a living organism. James D. Watson and Francis Crick first discovered the DNA's double helix, which is the structure of DNA, and opened the door to incredible possibilities with unknown effects. These unknown effects are what we are mostly concerned about, and they force us to suggest the need of a special committee to regulate experiments on recombinant DNA.
Recombinant DNA technology can be of great good for humanity, but unfortunately this technology is still rudimentary. Scientists do not yet have the knowledge to rightly apply recombinant DNA to humanity. Every experiment prior to being realized should be approved by a special committee that regulates them. This committee has to decide if there is a legitimate purpose for such experiments and also if the procedure is moral. This committee should be conformed by scientists, bio-ethicists, theologians and other people with different attitudes so that altogether, as a team, could determine if a certain experiment is approved or not. It cannot be just from one type of mentality because decisions would be favored in one direction, and not for the common good. Furthermore, this committee has to develop a specific training for inspectors that will be checking up scientists in laboratories. These inspectors have to know exactly what the committee permits and how to act when disasters happen in these dangerous experiments.
A good use of recombinant DNA is, for example, to clone a tissue of specific cells that, cultivated in laboratory, would become an orga...
