Night
Night is an autobiographical novel by Elie Wiesel. During the holocaust he was a fourteen-year old Jewish child that was put into Auschwitz (a Nazi concentration camp). Wiesel is one of the most well known authors and survivors of the Holocaust. Wiesel decided to write this novel because he felt that he had owed something to the dead, "I decided to devote my life to telling the story because I felt that having survived I owe something to the dead, and anyone who does not remember betrays them again." (Elie Wiesel). Night is a fantastic novel, which really opens the hearts of the reader to the true horrors of the holocaust. (www.sparknotes.com)Elie Wiesel was born on September 30, 1928. He grew up in a small village in Romania, and lived like any other Jewish child. He had two older sisters and a younger sister named Tzipora. His life mainly revolved around his family, religious studies and God. All of this however, was put to a sudden stop in 1944 when he and the rest of his Jewish community were deported to various concentration camps. (www.sparknotes.com) Elie and his father were taken to Auschwitz, where they were separated in the first selection from Elie's mother and younger sister
com)Upon his arrival in Birkenau, Eliezer and his father are separated from his mother and sisters, whom they never see again. And we had to look him full in the face. com)Fire appears throughout Night as a symbol of the Nazis' cruel power. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky. Darkness and night therefore symbolize a world without God's presence. com)This is an important quote in that they are literally being run to death. God appears to Moses as a burning bush, and vengeful angels wield flaming swords. While he is in the infirmary, however, the Nazis decide to evacuate the camp because the Russians are advancing and are on the verge of liberating Buna. Sons begin to abandon and abuse their fathers.
