1. Title: I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
             In I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Maya is exposed to racism when she is a young child. She believes that in order to be beautiful, you must have blonde hair and blue eyes. In Stamps, Arkansas, Maya is almost totally kept away from the white kids. As she gets older, she becomes more exposed to the racism that is out there. An incident that demonstrates this strong theme of racism is when the dentist refused to treat patients of color.
             In this novel, Maya travels between many homes and feels that she doesn't belong anywhere. She found what she believed to be acceptance when Mr. Freeman raped her. When this happened, she felt like she was finally being loved and accepted by someone. This is where she finds out that this is not the way to become accepted and then she continues on her journey for acceptance. Maya finally feels acceptance, at the age of thirteen, when she moves with Bailey, Daddy Clidell, and her mother to San Francisco.
             1. Maya Angelou: She is the novels main character, a young black girl that is faced with growing up in the South. With her birth name Marguerite Ann Johnson, she feels that she is ugly and doesn't belong. This character represents the struggles of growing into womanhood of the author Maya Angelou
             2. Bailey Johnson Jr: Bailey is Maya's older brother. He sees that Maya feels isolated and longs for fitting in, but he tries not to make himself feel the same way. By doing so, he must also protect himself by avoiding racism and its negative influences. Bailey is very close to Maya, and is one of the most important figures in her life, and shares most of her qualities, such as her intelligence and stream of thinking.
             3. Momma: Annie Henderson is Maya and Baileys biological grandmother. She raises them while they are children due to their parent's abandonment. She owns a store in Stamps, Arkansas, where she sells merchandise to the community...
