Raves and Drugs

When the word rave comes to mind, teenagers think of flashing lights, loud techno music and dance floors full of euphoric youth. What they might not realize is the danger that lurks in the people at those raves and the drugs that they might be carrying. Over the decade, raves have turn into giant-sized parties for teens to go and get their fill of psychedelic drugs while watching glow sticks spin and hear the loud thumping of fast-paced techno music. Rave promoters obtain enormous amounts of money to put on these all-night dance parties. These promoters need to spread the knowledge about drugs and warn young teens about the danger and drugs they face when they walk through doors of one of the largest growing trends in American youth today; Raves. Ecstasy is one of the most used drugs in the latest rave scene. Ecstasy (MDMA) is a synthetic, psychoactive drug with both stimulant and hallucinogenic properties (Methamphetamine 1). One of the reasons ecstasy is so popular with the teens of today is because it gives users an increased sense of touch and feeling (3). Users feel as if all of their nerves have been multiplied and have become more intense (2). However, Ecstasy is also one of the most dangerous drugs floating arou

It isn't hard to see the problem when you hear what some newspapers say about raves. PCP can result in addiction, and prolonged use can generate withdrawal syndrome (2). There shouldn't be an 8th grader in the nation that should have even heard of acid. Its well worth the promoter's money to seek large public venues and attract as many people as possible regardless of the information they know about the drugs that will be at the raves. Some LSD users experience severe, terrifying thoughts and feelings, fear of losing control, fear of insanity and death, and despair while using LSD (LSD1). The rave promoters need to do something to inform these parents about this type of danger. PCP, developed in the 1950's as an anesthetic, creates trances and "out of body" experiences (Dissociative 1). If the kids thought that there would be any threat whatsoever for them going to the rave, than they might be a little more cautious and uneasy about doing the drugs they do there. Methamphetamine, or Meth, is made is illegal laboratories and is very likely to become depended upon (1). These raves only cause the promoters up and around $10,000 a night (1). In November of 2001, Wisconsin raves were estimated to pull in an estimated $20,000 a night with 8,000 teens attending (Wilson 1). These rave owners are just encouraging the use of these psychedelic drugs to young teens and/or frequent ravers, putting them in danger of all the possible side effects. PCP is another favorite among dissociative drug users. When it comes down to it, Raves are clearly a serious problem. In this sense, it is used as a "drug rape" substance, posing another threat to the already dangerous drug (2).
