Library Integration

             If libraries are to continue to serve man in his pursuit of knowledge, services must all incorporate all ways of knowing. Integration of Information Technology and Computing are providing new kinds of materials and are affecting libraries similarly.
             The integration of Information Technology and Computing in library service over the past decade has been little short of spectacular. In the past ten to fifteen years there has been a gradual evolution of this integration.
             How has this been integrated overtime?
             Over the past twenty years a quiet but profound revolution has taken place in the world of library services. The first eddies of the wind of change were felt among the bookshelves with the integration of Information Technologies and Computing in the world scene. Its seemingly unlimited powers encouraged a flurry of wild speculation. Its arrival, it was said, heralded the era of the "paperless office", and there were those who did not hesitate to announce the imminent demise of the book..
             Today, integration has come of age. The menacing mystery has turned out to be a friendly servant whose ministrations affect every aspect of library service. Far from killing off the book, it offers the possibility of easy access for all to the world's libraries and has itself become the subject matter of thousands of new books and periodicals.
             In the early 1970s, libraries began to adopt software applications to allow then to perform specific functions more efficiently. These applications were frequently developed by the university or research institution with some cooperation from commercial software and hardware firms. In time, these systems became more widespread and the benefits more evident. There was an increase in both the number of vendors and the number of automated functions.
