Nuclear Energy in Today's Worl
In today's world there is a constant need for energy. Almost everything in the modern world requires energy, and to meet these demanding energy requirements, advancements are being made at an astonishing rate. There are many types of energy sources, such as fossil fuels, hydroelectric dams, facilities and wind generators, but the most debatable source of energy in the modern world is the use of nuclear power. Nuclear energy has been the topic of many heated debates and while it has numerous advantages, it also comes with a long list of disadvantages. The human race as a whole has asked this question many times. What would the world be like with or without nuclear energy? To obtain energy from nuclear reactions is a very complicated process. This process is called fission. When the nuclei of certain isotopes are bombarded with neutrons, they undergo fission, which is the splitting of a nucleus into smaller fragments. Fission unleashes enormous amounts of energy through a chain reaction process. The energy generated in the fission of one kilogram of Uranium-235 is the equivalent to twenty thousand tones of dynamite exploding. To control this process a nuclear reactor is required. There are five
With an extremely high half-life, there is a concern that some nuclear waste could be misplaced and humans from the future could stumble across it and cause a major catastrophe. The death rates in the production of nuclear power are lower than all other energy industries. This product is highly radioactive and highly dangerous. in coal mine accidents and another one hundred die transporting it. All in all, Nuclear Energy is a very safe way to produce energy and is very light on the pollutants that are released into the atmosphere. Also Uranium (the main fuel for nuclear energy) is more abundant than all of the fossil fuels in the world. A startling figure is that the United States and Russia have enough nuclear weapons to blow up this planet three hundred times over. Though nuclear energy is very clean and safe there are always the hidden concerns. Firstly, after the Uranium has been sapped of all energy there is a waste product. In areas where a nuclear disaster has happened, there are high amounts of birth defects, infertility, leukemia and other cancerous infections. With Fossil Fuels likely to run out on this planet in the next century, the human race will need other sources of energy. Probably the biggest concern with producing nuclear energy is the long term effects. Economically, there are great advantages to be made with nuclear power.
