South Africa and Apartheid
CONFLICT ANALYSIS: SOUTH AFRICA AND APARTHEIDSouth Africa, a land filled with natural riches, is a country faced with many racial conflicts. Being abundant in gold, diamonds, and nearly every resource besides oil, South Africa has attracted many people from around the world. The gathering of different ethnic groups has ignited a bomb of racism and oppression in South Africa. Black Africans have felt the worst end of oppression and racism, by having to put up with the White government's system of Apartheid. When different people cannot agree over the natural resources of land, hatred and oppression occur, as witnessed in the Apartheid era of South Africa. Although the actual system of apartheid was not introduced until 1948, racial tension between Blacks and Whites can be traced back to the 1600s. In 1652, the Dutch first permanently colonized the tip of South Africa on the Cape of Good Hope. The first colony of South Africa was called Stellenbosch, and African slaves were used. Whites intermarried with African slaves, and eventually produced the Coloured people. Hearing of gold, diamonds, and other natural riches, many Whites from Britain immigrated to South Africa, as well as many South Asians.
Results of this were Whites passing unfair laws on non-Whites, and they system of apartheid staying in power for almost 50 years. South Africa is a better place, since Blacks now have the power to vote. The White national government was protested against because of the great injustices caused by apartheid. Finally in 1991, apartheid was repealed. The Soweto uprisings lasted days, and 130 people ended up killed. The national government was made up Whites, and Blacks had their own type of government to control their Bantustans. If cities were not segregated under apartheid, most likely the system would have been repealed much sooner than 1991. The segregation of cities helped keep the White national government in power.
