Waking Life Philo Reflection
The movie Waking Life is very though provoking, as it brings up many philosophical ideas and issues, most of them centering on the ideas of personal identity, free will and appearance vs. reality. The movie bring up these points, but it seems much more focused on identifying the issues and thought provoking ideas that most people have never heard before than on arguing or explaining any of them. This leaves us to come up with the ideas for ourselves. The opening boat-car scene seems to be a discussion of personal identity. The man driving the boat-car tells us that it's the ride - which can be taken as a symbol for life - "does not require an explanation, only occupants." He also tells us: "this is like my little window to the wo
Or, another way of looking at it is to say that there is no way to tell if the baby in the picture is you or not. The woman in the restaurant said that she can look at a picture of herself as a child, but how does she know that that is actually her in the picture? She said that to connect the child in the picture to who we are today, we must construct a story linking the two. This is an interesting concept that is brought up, since we like to think that there is some consistency, that who we are isn't changing every moment, that our mind allows us to have a longer-lasting idea of ourselves. Waking Life can be very deep and thought provoking, or it can be meaningless; it all depends on you. In the restaurant, a discussion over the problem of identity continued, but in a slightly different sense. This agrees with the idea that our world is constantly changing. This creates a problem, since there is no way to tell if the story you create linking the picture to yourself is true or not. If we take these two quotes together an idea comes through that our identity could simply be a series of perceptions, each one only lasting for an instant. Does that mean that we cannot be certain of our identity? Many questions like this can arise when you start thinking about any of the conversations in the movie, but for many people these questions don't. In a sense, this idea from the movie is just another way of looking at the idea that everything is changing; only it is focused on the idea of personal identity. This is interesting, since when we think of our identity we usually think of it as always building on past experiences, but we can never be certain of that past. rld and every minute's a different show. Now I may not understand it, I may not even necessarily agree with it, but I'll tell you what, I accept it and just sort of glide along".
