Yanomami

             The Yanomamo are situated, more or less, along the confines of Venezuela and Brazil in South America. But they are also sparsely strewn across portions of Colombia and as far as Guyana. They literally dwell in the heart of the affluent Amazon rainforest. This area spans a vast, lush, and plentiful tropical forest. The climate, being a tropical forest, is quite humid and tepid, with torrential precipitation. There are two major seasons, which create an annual cycle. Those would simply be the wet, or rainy season, and the dry season that lasts from September through March. During the rainy season, much of the lowland jungle is inundated with heavy quantities of rainfall. At which time, travel is either impossible or, at least, impractical. It is only when the dry season comes that the Yanomamo can go about doing their various activities. The environment consists of a relatively dense jungle, which itself "contains a large variety of palm and hardwood trees" (Chagnon 1997:46).
             The majority of Yanomamoland is essentially a steep, rugged, and mountainous terrain. The elevation of which can reach from 370ft. to as high as 7700ft. above sea level. There is approximately 23,000 Yanomami living in roughly 200 to 250 randomly scattered villages. These villages are isolated by countless miles of vacant land. In some cases, however, villages are thinly separated by only a few miles or so.
             The Yanomamo's diet mainly consists of wild plant and animal foods. Chief among these is the plantain, a member of the banana family, but markedly bigger, it is usually cooked either roasted or boiled. The plantain is produced in the Yanomamo's gardens, and makes up nearly 70% of their diet. In fact, the bulk of the Yanomamo's food comes from their crops and agriculture (about 80%).
