A Modest Proposal

             Much like the current job action taken by the government of British Columbia against C.U.P.E. workers, a Modest Proposal attacks an ongoing social problem using blatant satire. In British Columbia workers have been forced back to work from a strike and instead of being given any kind of pay increase they have received a pay deduction, the exact opposite of a socially acceptable solution. Where in a Modest Proposal, the author, Jonathan Swift, proposes that the only viable solution to Ireland's poverty is to eat a high percentage of all infants when they reach the age of one. However, he says it in such a way that this proposal sounds logical and viable.
             First of all, you must understand that Irelands poverty stricken heritage was mainly due to the devilish influenced, or rather control, of the English. England always saw Ireland as just another colony which remained so weak that they need not physically conquer it but simply retard there economic possibilities. Thus, most of Ireland was owned by the English and most goods sold in Ireland were cheaply made and imported from England as to keep the Irish from ever becoming self-sufficient. This situation led to their massive poverty and to a Modest Proposal. The whole idea is that compared to what the English had done already, that they would not take the ridiculous situation a step further and eat babies doesn't seem far fetched. A very similar solution to our labour disputes in 2004.
             The next main point made by swift is the shear logistical numbers of the situation. Broken down mathematically, you start with one hundred and twenty thousand infants annually born of poor parents; subtract twenty thousand, reserved for breeding; thus the remaining hundred thousand infants will be sufficient for eating.
