Physical journeys

             Physical journeys can incorporate wonderful, treacherous, sometimes harmful experiences and consequences, but these experiences do not always arise at the completion of a physical journey. They may happen at the beginning or midway through. This statement can be backed up and reinforced by several of the studied texts, including: Peter Skrzynecki's poems, Crossing the Red Sea, Immigrants at Central Station and Migrant Hostel, The Ridley Scott Film, White Squall and The Wind in the Willows written by Kenneth Grahame. These inner journeys are often the most fulfilling element of a physical journey in one way or another.
             Crossing the Red Sea is quite a lengthy poem and describes the (physical) journey from Europe to Australia and how the immigrants finally found confidants on the boat, people who had been through the same thing as themselves, so there was no awkwardness in opening up because they were never going to see them again. It allowed them to discuss how they felt and to change the stagnant ways they had become accustomed to. It is also a poem about the physical change that the boat trip brought about.
             This Peter Skrzynecki poem supports the idea of inner journeys possessing the learning experiences other than the finalization. This is shown by writing a poem entirely about the journey to Australia, not the arrival at their destination and new home. They are able to share their previous physical journeys with fellow countrymen experiencing the same journey to get to where they are. There are also several techniques used in this poem to convey the point of important inner journeys. These can be speech in which the immigrants are reminiscing of pain and suffering they have endured or, of pleasant images they wish to remember for a long time to come, however it is inevitable that they remember the dire images and stories better than the pleasurable ones.
