Capital Punishment

             According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, in 2003, sixty five inmates were executed (executions). The question being, were these sixty five deaths of moral proportion? This is a question asked by many and answered with many different perspectives. My beliefs are that, yes, these sixty five executions were justified. The crimes that were committed to get these inmates on death row were heinous and sickening. These crimes are more often than not thought of as being punishable by death. Although executions bring forward many moral issues, I believe that the majority of the population sees it as an acceptable punishment.
             When I think of capital punishment, I try to see it from the victim or victims' family's perspective. I know I could never understand and hopefully I never have to understand, the suffering these people have been through. I also know that if it was someone in my family that had become a victim of one of these heinous crimes, I would want the criminal to suffer the same pain that he/she inflicted upon my family. Some people may call this "an eye for an eye", and it is. If it were possible to subject each inmate to a punishment resembling the nature of their crime, I would say do it. Since this is often not possible, we have formed a system in which we find a penalty that is somewhat equivalent to the harm caused. This is typically a set amount of time in prison followed by probation and fines. There are also times when these crimes are found punishable by death. In a sense this may be considered "an eye for an eye", because the punishment is equivalent to the crime committed.
