The Benefits of Majoring in Liberal Arts

             Students enter college to prepare their future life. However, depending on their characteristics, the ways colleges teach their students to prepare their futures are different. Technical colleges or business colleges' missions are quite straightforward. They are to provide job-based education to produce 'Task-oriented students.' Thus, these colleges would be well fit for students, who view college education to make them learn how to get a job. In the other hand, liberal arts colleges provide education not only related to the job but also to provide well-roundedness to the students as well. The well-rounded person possesses not only knowledge in his job field but also has various interests and knowledge in the fields of the humanities and the sciences. This well-roundedness 'helps people to live better and enjoy life more.' Liberal arts colleges emphasize the importance of both. In equal, liberal arts colleges aim to balance individuals to make them get ready for their jobs as much as to make them well-rounded. However, students in liberal arts colleges today are facing the unbalance between job-related education and education for well-roundedness. Many of the students are viewing the liberal education curriculum as something that is separated from them to get a job.
             Moreover, because of this unbalance, students tend to underestimate the benefits of liberal education and seem to view it as irrelevant to help them succeed in their careers. However, the effects of liberal education cannot be underestimated. Today's liberal arts college must lessen the unbalance by emphasizing the practical benefits liberal education can give to the students in their job careers; they can achieve this by stimulating students to delve themselves into the liberal education curriculum.
