Macbeth

             There are many ways to analyze Macbeth which was written by William Shakespeare. The following four theatrical stances will be discussed; a feminist viewpoint, english criticism, a post-structuralist technique and a psychoanalytical approach.
             When we first encounter Lady Macbeth, Shakespeare and for this to take place;
             Shakespeare expresses sympathy for the character Lady Macbeth. He portrays her as ruthless, ambitious, and powerful. Lady Macbeth has frightening, deep desire for her husband, Macbeth, to rise to the throne and she is willing to murder King Duncan. To carry out the murder plan, Shakespeare allows Lady Macbeth to take on characteristics that not of a mortal woman. She calls upon evil spirits to make her monstrous. "Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts" ( I, v, l.39-40). She also needs to become a man," Unsex me here and fill me from the crown to the toe top full of direst cruelty" ( I, v, l.40-42).
             Shakespeare is sympathetic to Lady Macbeth and this is demonstrated through Lady Macbeth's traits of humanity. She could not commit the murder because King Duncan reminded her of her father and therefore her husband Macbeth must carry out their evil plan. "Had he not resembled my father as he slept, I had don 't" ( II, ii, l.13-14).
             Lady Macbeth shows moments of humanity during the play and this makes her suicide more inevitable. Despite "what is done is done" (III, ii, l.12) Lady Macbeth reveals her guilt and remorse through her sleepwalking and this leads the demise of Lady Macbeth through her suicide; "by self and violent hands took off her life" (V, viii, l.70-71).
