Leda and the Swan In the poem "Leda and the Swan," by William Butler Yeats, we are introduced to the rape of a mortal girl by an all-powerful god, Zeus. Yeats' sonnet is irregular and has ambiguities. In this sonnet we are informed of the event which is partly responsible for the Trojan War and the assassination of Agamemnon. Helen, blessed with excelled beauty, ignited the Trojan War. However, when Agamemnon arrived home, after ten years of war, Clytemnestra and her lover, Aegisthus with whom she has an affair while Agamemnon was fighting the Trojan war, murdered him. The Trojan War lasted for ten years in the result of which the Troy was sacked and thousands of warriors had lost their lives, someone of them were the famous heroes like Achilles. The disastrous events: the Trojan War and the assassination of Agamemnon, are examples of recklessness of Zeus and other gods and their impact among the humanity. The rape of Leda was partly responsible for the Trojan War and the death of Agamemnon because of its consequences. There is also an allusion to Agamemnon's murder, "And Agamemnon dead. Instead of consisting out of four lines, there is a gap in the middle of the stanza and another broken line is inserted there. The rape of Leda is being described in this poem. Yeats' irregular and disfigured sonnet has allusions to events which play an important role in The Odyssey and The Iliad. Odysseus was absent for twenty years from his home after Helen became the consort of Paris. A god raping or having sexual intercourse with a mortal is an allusion to all those times Zeus and other gods had sexual intercourses in The Odyssey such as the time when Zeus had sex with Europa who, in result, produced Minos, a king of Crete. Clytemnestra also dies by the hands of Orestes. Leda gave birth to Helen and Clytemnestra. Also, Yeats' sonnet is disfigured in the fourth stanza.
