Outbreak of WW1

In the lead up to the Great War there were many factors that contributed to the Outbreak of this tragic time in World history. The immediate conflict that caused the great powers to attack was the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist in 1914.The lead up to this event in history involved imperialistic, territorial, and economic rivalries, particularly among Germany, France, Great Britain, Russia, and Austria-Hungary.These issues, imperialism and nationalism, resulted in a strengthening of an alliance system. These notions and systems threatened the balance of power, thus one of the causes major war to break out.From the end of the Franco-Prussian War, a system of secret alliances was formed in Europe. This eventually caused a division among the continent. These agreements turned Europe into two hostile sides. The Great Powers in Europe, and also the smaller ones were involved in mutual defence agreements, when the war broke out in 1914, it involved nearly every country of Europe. Russia was forced to surrender their territory in the Balkans. In 1891 they formed the Franco-Russian Entente. The Triple Alliance was the main pact for the Central powers. Their aim was to achieve this by using terrorism and violent acts. Prince Otto von Bismarck, the Kaiser of Germany, at the time wanted to deny France allies, eliminating another war with France. A young officer in 1911 formed a secret society called the Unity of Death also known as the Black Hand. Italy however, declared neutrality at the outbreak, leaving Germany with only Austria.
