With Particular Reference to the impact of Heredity and Environment, Compare and Contrast Two Theories of Personality.There are many different theories regarding personality, the qualities which make up a persons character. All personality theorists have their own approaches regarding what determines a persons' character. I will be concentrating on two opposing theories. Carl Rogers' Idiographic theory, claiming that personality is individual, versus Hans Eysencks' nomothetic theory, claiming that people can be measured and that we all have the same traits or characteristics but in different measures. Looking at each theorist individually and assessing their approach I will try to find comparisons or similarities and contrasts or differences between the two, based on their beliefs about what makes a personality.It is important to note that each of these theorists had a very different psychological approach to their work and therefore there is immediately a huge contrast between the two. Roger's took a humanistic approach to psychology claiming that we are a product of our environment, and Eysenck a biological approach and so claimed that hereditary and not environment creates who we are.
Therefore he is saying that to some extent at least he believes environment plays a part. Finally although they are both good theories on their own, it is my belief that no one theory can explain personality. However it is when we receive the opposite of this that we grow into what Rogers' describes as the maladjusted person. As a humanist Roger's believed the human being is not only unique but also has freedom of choice over their own destinies. Eysencks' original findings were based on fairly limited sampling and the theory itself is very simplistic. This starts with the basic survival needs for things such as food and water and grows into the need for self-fulfilment in areas such as independence and creativity. However Rogers' states that in order for us to thrive and become all that we can be we must have a stable environment in which to grow. In order to do this we must receive unconditional positive regard; unconditional love, acceptance and positive approval from significant others within our environment. The findings have shown much greater similarities between the intelligence, introversion-extroversion and neuroticism of identical rather than non identical twins. His counselling technique depends on three essential approaches from the counsellor. the neurotic extrovert, the stable extrovert, the neurotic introvert or the stableintrovert. Genuineness, unconditional positive regard; to accept the client whatever they may say or do at any moment, and empathic understanding; the ability to get onto the clients wavelength. The fully functioned versus the maladjusted, not only is this too few but also it is unrealistic that many of us would become one of these two extremes. One explanation for this may be that Rogers' was first and foremost a therapist andtherefore is explaining extremes that would be present in his psychotherapy theory rather than his theory of personality.
