Akira Toriyama
Since I have been very young, I have loved the work of Akira Toriyama. For a long time, I did not know of the existence of the artist himself, but I loved many of his works. The first time I saw one of his works was on Cartoon Network when I was 9 years old. This was in the form of an animated TV show called Dragonball Z. Although Akira Toriyama was not directly responsible for this show, without his work the show would not have existed (DBGTN.com). Akira Toriyama is one of the most famous manga artists of all time (Schodt 141). Manga is the Japanese word for comics, however the manga that Toriyama draws are slightly different then the American comics we are used to. The drawing style of manga is very similar to the "anime" or "japanimation" we now see frequently on American TV on shows such as Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Akira Toriyama started drawing manga when he was very young (about 13 years old) (DBZ GT Legacy). He became a professional at about 22 years of age. Because he was so young when he became a professional, he wrote many of his mangas about children and their experiences (Toriyama Interview 2). This could be one of the reasons I was so drawn to him and his work when I was young. Akira Toriyama was born in 1955 in the
Most of the male characters in Dragonball are normal looking males, but most of the main character have very pronounced muscles and are extremely strong (Toriyama Dragonball Z #1). I also enjoy the animation style that he uses. Like most other manga, the characters have larger than life eyes. "I wasn't planning on Goku becoming a Super Saiyan, so when I came up with the Super Saiyan idea, I thought that his appearance should also change to show his power-up. It is written in such a way that you always want to find out what happens next. Aichi region of Japan (near Tokyo in the outskirts of the Nagoya capitol). Toriyama attended and graduated from the design department of the prefecture industrial high school in 1974. He then added a new element to the series, the Tenka-Ichi Budokai (World's Ultimate Martial Arts Tournament). Not much of his childhood is known other than the fact that he enjoyed to doodle sketches while at school and was greatly inspired by Disney's 101 Dalmatians and other popular children's movies. This second series, Dragon Ball Z, was a run away hit, producing literally hundreds of weekly episodes until its end in January 1996. It is said that if one person collects all seven of the balls, they will be granted one wish by a dragon that will emerge when the balls are brought together. Throughout the series he saves the earth and the universe from destruction many times from many different villains. 'This "crowd-pleaser material" became the hallmark of the second animated series; the fight-fight-fight-oriented Dragon Ball Z.
