             A war has just ended in Iraq. There is no government to govern, no police to police the cities. The streets are littered with looters and pillagers. There is no social order. People are insecure of what will happen next and are not able to lead their "normal" lives as they did before. Something must be done to restore social order in Iraq. The Iraqi society must cooperate and bring predictability back in their lifestyles in order for social order to arise. There are four concepts that explain how social order is produced. The four concepts that will be discussed in this paper are shared meaning, shared norms and values, coercion and legitimate authority. In this paper I will be going through the importance of each concept and the significance each one has on restoring social order. In addition, I will indicate which concepts I feel are most significant to the establishment of social order in Iraq.
             The concept of shared meaning is based on communication. The more understanding a society has with one another, the better the society will be as regards to social order. Shared concepts and beliefs are what is needed for successful communication in a given society. Things such as time and space are very valuable to keeping order in society. Zerubavel states that "Social order would be threatened by the disappearance of the week" (43). Meaning that we base our lifestyle and what we do in society on time, from hours to days to weeks. Sociologists look at Shared meaning different from one another. George Herbert Mead believes, "Our understanding of our role in the world is forged in the process of interaction" (47). Mead means that social life is a game and everyone has a specific role to play. His example is baseball. In a baseball game everyone has specific roles to play on the field and if one person does not play their role right then the team is destined for failure. Everyone must know...
