Portrait of the Artist
As teenagers we are only beginning to realize how malleable we have been in our opinions and understanding of Society, throughout our entire lives until this point. Friends, family, and community influence our views on the social characteristics of the world by the situations and people they bring us into contact with. As demonstrated in both Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and "The Baker's Story," society puts up certain boundaries, such as religion and race onto characters coming from different cultures. Examples of these restrictions and biases can also be found in my own life. Changing your views on society from those you were brought up with is very difficult as often it requires you to go against what you know and not be afraid of difference. As you grow so does your idea of how the social order of the world fits into your personal ideals of society. "I ask Percy why he didn't like black people meddling with his food in public places. "And it was only then that the thing hit me. The religious expectations of the Irish culture at the time and the class standards set before him are two very easily influenced idea developments he faces in his early life. when black people in Trinidad go to a restaurant they don't like to see black people dealing meddling with their food. Since my birth, ideas and rules of sorts have been planted in my mind to help me create my own opinions and be able to differ right from wrong. It is not until he is older is Stephen able to overcome these ideas given to him by his parents and other family and community influences, and build and establish beliefs of his own. Social class is another heavily influencing force acting on Stephen as he grows up in this Irish culture. The separation between Catholics and Protestants is a very heated topic while he is growing up, a public debate that forces its way into his home and divides even the closest members of his family. giving Stauble and Pantin and Coelho a run for their money. and going in the bank, from the front. As I say, I only going in the shops from the back. Just as Stephen's family showed him separate judgments on their religious society, the community Young Man lived him showed him the division between races in society. every race have to do different things.
