A Modest Proposal

             Throughout the ages, fire has proven to be a destructive force, often out of the control of mankind. Through my observations, fire is at its most devastating when begun in a forest, where it is permitted to spread and grow in magnitude more easily because of the high concentration of vegetation. Often times, if a fire is permitted to grow large enough, it may incinerate hundreds, or even thousands of acres of irreplaceable forest land. Because of these malicious forest fires, countless acres are charred each year, often taking human lives and property with them.
             In my opinion, this sinister destructive force should no longer be permitted to run rampant through our forests, taking everything in their path with them. Thus, I propose a practical, simple solution to this pressing predicament. I feel that the only way to eradicate this problem is to cut down every last tree, bush, herb, vine, and shrub on the face of the earth. I feel that this task could be easily completed within a matter of two or three years if executed properly. In order to be completed in a timely and orderly manner, I suggest that the governments of every country impose a quota of say five trees a month for those between the ages of eighteen and sixty-five, and a lesser number for our seniors and juniors of possibly one or two trees per month. Each citizen would of course be provided with a chainsaw in order to quickly and efficiently hack away at any plant-life in sight. Furthermore, I propose that a government agency be created that will be in charge of transporting this material to the middle of the Sahara dessert, in which it will all be set aflame in a controlled atmosphere, never to contribute to the evil of forest fires again.
