The gold rush
"What if the shinny material was never found?In a world of hypothetical questions one has to wonder where our country would be if we had not secured what is currently known to be California, from the ruling hand of Mexico. California state history would be severely different had the Gold Rush never happened. To better understand the affects of this question, I will talk about where the gold rush took place, the results of the gold rush, and the effects of what would happen if the gold rush had not taken place. "California derives fro the Latin words Cali and Fornix. 'Cali fornix means "hot oven", another dead end for most linguistic inquiries, but which actually means 'alchemical crucible', the sort of alchemical crucible that has a single purpose: to turn ordinary materials into gold." (Henry 283). California was later recognized as the golden state; the gold rush came and soon swept California by surprise. The most prevalent area of mining that took place was around the foothills of San Francisco. In the start of the early 1840's there were only a few hundred people living in San Francisco but by the end of the gold rush thousands inhabited there. The city's real estate soon began to rise significantly as did the number
The foreigners encountered many obstacles including the Foreign Miners Tax in 1850, this law made noncitizen miners pay 20 dollars per month, which left them with little or no money. The California gold rush was not just an American event; it was a world wide gold revolution. They had no intention in staying in California, they wanted to get their gold and go home. Every nook and cranny of the California Mountains was completely engulfed with such miners and as the digging space near the city began to crowd miners began spreading northward and southward. The panama stretch was in thought along with many rail road paths. Without the gold rush California would also not be as diverse as it is known today. California will always remember Sutter's mill and the great find that took place there, and the treasured words GOLD, GOLD, GOLD!. The Chinese were named "coolie", such word derives from two Chinese words "koo" meaning to rent, and "lee" meaning muscle, "The rented muscle". They worked for cheaper wages (35 dollars per month), and longer hours than Americans. If it wasn't for the gold rush many of them would have never made it out to California, because their masters would not have had a reason to go there. Huntington, Charles Crocker, and Mark Hopkins) construct their railroads, such as the Central pacific Railroad. The American prejudice grew and went as far as passing ordinances such as the "pig tail ordinance" which required all convicted male prisoners to cut their cultural style hair which was long, to one inch of their heads. In the beginning of the year 1849 there were fifty-four china-men in the whole state of California but by the year 1876 the Chinese had 151,000 thousand in the United States whom 116 thousand lived in California.
