Isaac Asimov's: Those Crazy Id

             Holding a conversation is so pedestrian, everyone anyone can master it. People all around the world use it daily to gossip, explain, teach, or simply to exchange ideas. Yet looking deeper into the how these ideas come up, it becomes evident that conversation is an intricate process. The ideas that come across are linked seamlessly, but how? Isaac Asimov, in his essay Those Crazy Ideas explains this conversational style while keeping his prose short and punchy, and rhetoric is used to give the sense of plausible train of thought.
             Asimov set off to explain how he, a science fiction writer, came up with the ideas for his stories. Yet right from the start, it seems as though he is not writing a formal paper, but instead is sitting down with the readers comfortably and telling them about anything that popped into his mind. Asimov utilizes questioning throughout his essay, yet answers his the questions himself with an example later. In the beginning of the essay, for example, he asked how Darwin came up with the theory of evolution and then goes on for ten paragraphs about how Darwin went on his famous H.M.S. Beagle trip to the Caribbean to watch animals. Asimov then tells how it took many more years, after reading a certain book, Darwin came up with a theory and spent another fourteen years perfecting it. This process of asking questions and answering them keeps the essay flowing to its next points smoothly. They are almost like informal transitional sentences.
             Another stylistic flourish he uses is when he tries to explain the process of coming up with 'crazy ideas' can only be explained after analyzing why Darwin is writing the essay. Asimov is writing the essay in response to a team of scientists who have asked him about coming up with ideas.
