Winston and Julia by 1984

Winston Smith, 1984 tells the story of one man's revolt against the society he lives in. The novel begins in Airstrip One, which was once known as England, in April of 1984. Winston Smith is a low ranking official of the Party, the totalitarian regime that rules Airstrip One. The Party watches every moment of Winston's life through telescreens placed in his home and office, which can be dimmed but never completely shut off. At Winston's job in the Records section of the Ministry of Truth, where he updates and destroys old documents so they match new developments, Winston meets a young girl named Julia. They begin an affair, which is strictly against party policy and would have a severe punishment upon being caught. Largely because of this affair, Winston becomes more and more rebellious. Winston and Julia meet with a member of the Inner Party named O'Brien. They believe O'Brien is a member of the Brotherhood, an anti-party organization that is only rumored to exist. Unfortunately, the Thought Police, the group that watches the people of Airstrip One through the telescreens, realize that Winston and Julia are rebelling against the party. Winston and Julia are immediately captured and taken to the Ministry of Love. Once there, they are beaten and brainwashed by O'Brien. O'Brien had only pretended to be a member of the Brotherhood to catch Winston being disloyal to the Party. Even after weeks of torture, Winston still hates the Party. Because Winston still resists, O'Brien takes him to a room, places a cage of rats on his head, and tells him the rats will eat his face. Winston finally breaks and tells O'Brien to torture Julia instead of him. Now that his will is broken, Winston is released. He encounters Julia again but they no longer have feelings for each other. Winston no longer hates the Party and realizes that he loves Big Brother, the head of the Party.
