Same Sex Marriage
Will and Grace. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. These hit televisions shows are some examples of how far acceptance of homosexuals have come in our culture. What once was considered lewd and shameful behavior that people were shunned and outcast for is now widely accepted by the public as a normal lifestyle. Now that acceptance is being put to the legal test. Does our society really tolerate homosexuals? Or have homosexual rights not come as far as we think they have? These issues are coming to a head with the heated debate over same-sex marriages. I believe if our society really accepts gays and lesbians as much as we think we do, then there is no reason same-sex marriages should not be legal in all fifty states. Same-sex marriage will allow two people of the same gender to enter into a legally binding contract with all the rights and responsibilities of a marriage between a man and a woman. However, many people believe that same-sex marriages will somehow ruin the sanctity of marriage. Some interpret the law to state that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Others even believe that the whole idea of same sex couples is immoral and against traditional Christian values that this country should uphold. Still othe
Portland City Councilperson Serena Cruz, who played a significant part in the decision to allow same-sex couples to marry in Multnomah County reflects on the issue by saying, "As this issue becomes more real for everyone, [it's going to become] easier to have a broad acceptance for same-sex marriage. It tells us that people don't think of us as freaks of nature who don't belong here. " Nowhere does it state in this Declaration that marriage is restricted to a man and a woman. They deserve the same rights as everyone else. to the rights and freedoms set force in this Declaration" regardless of "race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Because I am not religious I don't consider these arguments to be valid because there is and always has been a separation between church and state; religious beliefs should have no influence on decisions made in the government. Many same-sex couples have been committed to each other for many years and have more faith in the sanctity of marriage than heterosexual across the country. There are gay sitcoms, gay parades etc. A civil union gives some of the same rights as marriage, depending on the specific state, but often times is not as legally or socially accepted. " There's no reason not to include sexual orientation in "other status" and there's no reason to deny homosexual Cox 3couples Article 16, which declares that "men and women of full age. " At a hearing, when Judge Dale Koch asked Clark what specific harm handing out marriage license to same-Cox 4sex couples does, Clark could not produce an intelligible answer.
