Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred Hitchcock was born in London, England on April 13, 1899. He was the son of an East End Grocer named William and mother Emma. His father died when he was fourteen and he was raised Catholic attending a Jesuit run school for scholastic upbringing. In 1915, he secured his first job as an estimator for a telegraph and cable company. Then, in 1920 he earned his opening job within the movie industry as a title designer in a London studio. Subsequently, he worked as an assistant director, writer, and art director, until Hitchcock was offered an opportunity to direct his first film, The Pleasure Garden. Yet the care and accuracy he managed in movies utilizing all the elements of film technique sustained his popularity throughout the years. He was a master of suspense in films, employing at times the use or distortion of sound to produce anticipation in his audience and often provided the audience with information denied to characters on screen to create tension in a movie's plot. lms including The Lodger where he introduced his first cameo appearance in a movie, later becoming a trademark of Hitchcock films. In 1980, on the New Year's Honors list, Hitchcock was named Knight Commander of the British Empire. In his films, Hitchcock strove to analyze art from both critical and moral perspectives and his cinematic techniques such as camera angles either adding space or taking it away were always employed as a method to destroy any separation between the film and its audience. Another of Hitchcock's preferences in films were blonde female stars, always seeking the icy look, he stated that the audience would have greater sexual interest in the character. He was considered an extremely accomplished director. His most noted films include; Psycho, The Birds, Notorious, Vertigo, Rebecca, North By Northwest, The Man Who Knew Too Much, and Rear Window. At the same time, however, Hitchcock was often characterized as self centered and demonstrated a lack of concern for others. Hitchcock died on April 28, 1980 of kidney failure and heart problems. Hitchcock also often used bathrooms as a device for murders, hiding places, or lovemaking scenes. He is survived by his only child Patricia Hitchcock (Alfred Hitchcock - Filmography & Biography).
