             Look! That man is using a walking stick he must be blind. Look! That woman has a dog in the mall; it must be a seeing-eye dog. Look! A child in McDonald's reading a menu in Braille. Common perception is that "those" people with vision impairments are blind, but can others with 20/20 vision be blind as well? In the book Native Son by Richard Wright, Mrs. Dalton, who is one of the main characters, is blind. Mrs. Dalton witnesses a crime that she never saw because of her impairment, and therefore does not realize she is a witness. Her blindness prevents her from knowing the truth about the murder, when she was right in the room when it happened. Other characters in Native Son, with perfect vision, are also blind to many things that happen in the story, even if it is not an obstacle in their everyday life.
             In the story, Bigger is one of his own worst enemies. Bigger convinces himself that he killed Mary on purpose. Bigger is blind to the truth that murdering Mary was not his true intention. Bigger simply wanted Mary to be quiet so she would not get in trouble when Mrs. Dalton realized that she was drunk, and when she realized that Mary had told Bigger to drive to somewhere other than the University. Bigger is also blind to the real definition of love. Bigger has this picture in his mind that his relationship with Bessie is based on love. Bigger does not know any better than to assume that if there is anything sexual between him and Bessie, then it must be a reverberation of their love for each other.
             When we first meet Bessie she is passionate about anything regarding Bigger. Like Bigger, she assumes that there is a great love between them because of their purely sex based relationship. Knowing that she would do almost anything for him, Bigger asks Bessie to help him cover up the murder and get ransom money from the Daltons.
