Lab Report
Nutrients are to provide basic building blocks for growth , supplyenergy and to provide necessary materials for molecules. Digestion is partof food processing. Major components of food processing include ingestion, digestion, absorption and elimination. The dissections of a fetal pig, frog and perch shed light on the digestive processes of organisms withprimitive as well as more advanced digestive systems. Pigs are mammals and all of the major structures found in humans arepresent in the fetal pig. The stomach, esophagus, spleen, bile ductsystem, small intestines are all abdominal organs found in the fetal pigthat are basically the same as found in the human body. However, the fetalpig's liver has five lobes. The pig colon is spiral. The caecum is ablind pouch that forms the beginning of the large intestine. The duodenumbegins at the stomach and stops at the jejunum. The pyloric valve is thesphincter muscle between the duodenum and the stomach. A good example ofstructure relating to digestive function is the epiglottis. The epiglottisfolds over the glottis to prevent food or liquid from going into the The small intestine of the frog is
Humans and pigs are omnivores with dietsthat have included both animals and plants historically. Dogs have small fermentation "vats" and can't usecellulose. Horses and goats as herbivores adapted digestive tracts into bigfermentation "vats" which allow them to use cellulose present in plants. Nematodes andearthworms have complete digestive systems. Intestines in herbivorous fish are up to fifteen times thebody length of the fish. The intestine forms an S-shaped loop. The lower phyla of animals have less advanced systems fordigestion. In the grasshopper, we see a more advanced digestive system. Conclusion:Structure relates to functioning in organism digestive tracts through theprocess of adaptation. Large herbivores eat bigquantities of food that take a longer time to digest and are low innutrient value. Oneinteresting thing about its structure is that the opening of the esophagusis very elastic and can stretch, which directly relates to its feedingbehavior. Dogs have teeth adapted to cutting up, tearing and grippingflesh as they are carnivores. Sheep, an example of an herbivore, have teeth which have become adapted togrinding up vegetation and cropping plants. The additional organs outside the food tubeare present in higher forms of animals.
