Democrats versus Republicans

I did not think that this assignment would be this hard. Drawing comparisons or contrasts on many subjects is easy. You may be able to see, hear or touch the similarities and differences. Additionally, you might be able experience or feel their parallels and diversities. One thing I have learned during this assignment is that the philosophies of people's politics is not so easily compared and contrasted. There are many differences and similarities between the two parties. In this article I will do my best to share a little history, make comparisons and show you the reader the differences of the two parties. When political alignments emerged in this country during George Washington's administration, an opposing faction aptly named Jeffersonian Democracy emerged led by Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. The Jeffersonians advocated a society based on the small farmer; and they opposed strong centralized governme

Even though both parties believe that welfare for those who are down on their luck is necessary, they differ only in the way they would distribute it. The two parties have more differences then similarities on social issues. The most controversial issues of politics are the social issues. Let us be the generation that begins to thinks for itself. Although the Democratic Party staunchly advocates affirmative action policies are still necessary, the Republican party's stand is that affirmative action is obsolete because the playing field has been leveled and a man's worth should be measure more on his performance and desire than on the color of his skin. Republicans feel abortion is immoral and as a result should be illegal while the Democrats feel that it is a woman's right to chose what happens to her own body. I assure you, that was not my intention when I started this article. In 1828 the party was officially named the Democratic Party and held its first national convention. A teeter-totter type domination has occurred since the turn of the century. The Democrats whole-heartedly lobby for new gun control laws and weapons bans. When the Republican Party is a majority in the Senate or Congress, there always an increase in military spending and in contrary when the Democrats are in the majority there is a decrease in military spending. Meanwhile the Republicans with support from the NRA continue fight to preserve the 2nd amendment. With the Democratic Party being deeply divided on this on the slavery issue, the emergence of the antislavery Republican Party in 1854 and radical economic policies, many Democratic Party members were found defecting to the Republican Party. Don't just follow the masses or vote one way because your parents did.
