The Age of Conquest immediately followed the age of Exploration in Europeand coincided with the fall of the Byzantine Empire. With Catholicism beingthreatened across Europe, many of the European powers such as Spain andPortugal sought to reestablish the dominance of Christianity throughout theworld. As the Ottoman Empire grew, a series of Muslim crusades furtherbolstered the need for Europe to enter the Age of Conquest. The Ottomansgained significant footing in the Eastern Mediterranean and began taking


The Age of Conquest essentially created a Europeancontinent as a culturally, politically, and religiously distinct entityfrom the East. Economicstherefore became a significant impulse behind European conquest. The subsequent population explosion in the New World gave rise to theAfrican slave trade, which became a major global market. Spain's conquest of the Aztecs and Incas was amajor factor in this initial phase of the Age of Conquest. Fertile lands inthe West Indies and in the Americas gave rise to an entirely new economicsystem, ripe for the hungry European powers, including England. Christians in Western Europe sought to amass territory abroad and tosecure new trade routes. Finally, scientific exploration and discovery blossomedin the latter part of the Age of Conquest, making Europe's colonies evenmore valuable. Especially after the discovery of the NewWorld, European powers had a distinct political need for imperialisticpower. Englandwas often at odds with its continental neighbors and had domestic disputesto deal with before entering the Age of Conquest with other Europeans likethe Dutch, the Portuguese, and the Spaniards. The Age of Conquest entailed a clash of cultures. The New World offered Englanda chance to gain an economic foothold in the world and compete with otherEuropean nations. England entered the Age of Conquest after other nations because oftheir cultural, political, and geographical distance from the otherEuropean powers. After Spain expulsedthe Muslim Moors, the drive to prevent Muslim encroachment in WesternEurope became a major imperative.
